It lands on the phone of a 50-year-old office worker whose lower back has been getting stiffer for a decade, and that person quietly crosses the one movement most likely to help them off the list. The question of whether deadlifts are dangerous deserves a more careful answer than the one being broadcast, because the claim is being made as a general rule when it does not hold as one.

The conventional deadlift, coached correctly and loaded progressively, is one of the most effective tools for building the posterior chain, loading the skeleton, and training the hip hinge that every functional movement in daily life depends on. The cost on the other side of the ratio is a decade of progressive deconditioning, paid by the person who took the advice. Several have watched it return during a layoff and settle again when they came back to the bar. This is not a promise that a barbell fixes every back, and acute or undiagnosed pain needs assessment before loading. But it is consistent with what the physiology predicts. A lumbar spine that is loaded, recovered, and progressively strengthened behaves like a stronger structure, because that is what it has become.

The mechanism is the one that governs adaptation in every other tissue. Mechanical tension is applied to the structure. The structure experiences stress sufficient to provoke a biological response but not sufficient to exceed its current capacity. Recovery follows, adaptation occurs, and the tissue can now tolerate a slightly greater load than before.

Bone density increases under axial loading and tendon cross-sectional area increases under progressive tension. Muscle hypertrophies in response to mechanical overload. The lumbar spine and its supporting musculature follow the same rules as the rest of the body.

The lumbar spine is undertrained rather than structurally fragile, and those two problems require opposite interventions. Avoidance treats the spine as a liability sitting on a hair trigger, which is physiologically incoherent. Progressive loading under competent instruction treats it as what it is. The clearest evidence for this is what shows up on imaging. Spinal degeneration appears on the scans of most pain-free adults over forty, which means a frightening MRI report is a poor explanation for pain and a worse reason to stop loading. Avoiding the Deadlift Relocates the Risk Rather Than Removing It

The real-world demands on the hip hinge do not disappear because someone stopped going to the gym. They arrive when that person lifts a grandchild off the floor, hauls a case into an overhead locker, shovels the drive after a frost, or picks up a bag of compost. Every one of these is a deadlift performed without coaching or preparation, often under fatigue or in an awkward position.

A person who has spent years progressively loading the hinge has a lower back, hamstrings, and glutes prepared for exactly these demands. A person told to avoid deadlifts has a posterior chain that was denied the stimulus it needed to handle them. The load arrives regardless. The only variable that changed is the person's capacity to tolerate it, and that capacity got worse on purpose.

This is the core failure of the avoidance model. It treats the gym as the source of risk when the gym is the one environment where the load is graduated and supervised. Removing the deadlift from a programme transfers the load to an uncontrolled environment rather than eliminating it, and the transfer happens at the worst possible moment.

For adults past 50, the case for learning the deadlift is strongest and the consequences of avoiding it are most severe. Sarcopenia, bone density loss, and declining hip extension power are the primary mechanical drivers of falls, fractures, and functional decline. These three processes are the mechanical infrastructure of frailty, and they respond to the same intervention: progressive resistance training with compound movements that load the skeleton and demand posterior chain engagement. The deadlift does all of it in a single movement. It loads the spine axially, stimulates bone adaptation, demands hip extension against resistance, and trains the posterior chain through a full range of motion under load.

Advising the over-50 population to avoid the deadlift removes the intervention most capable of changing the trajectory they are already on.

What Progressive Loading Actually Looks Like: From Empty Bar to a Heavy Pull

One of my clients came to me having been told, after spinal surgery several years earlier, that loading her spine was off the table for good. She now deadlifts numbers that most people who have never had back surgery never reach. Previous injury changed where she started. It did not change what her back was capable of becoming.

The first sessions were entirely about position: feet at hip width, bar over mid-foot, hips back until the hands reached the bar, chest up, back set. Load did not matter yet, because the motor pattern had to be established first, and rushing that is where injuries come from. Weight increased in 2.5 kg and 5 kg increments, session by session, as the positions held and the movement stayed controlled.

At no point was she asked to do anything heroic. At every point, the load was matched to the tissue's current capacity plus a small increment that recovery could absorb. That is what progressive overload means in practice, and it is the work the podcast conversation skips entirely.

I can speak to the other side of this from my own training. I spent years pulling with a rounded back, the spine flexing under every rep. My deadlift was weaker for it, because a back that gives way under load leaks force that should be moving the bar. It was not, however, the injury event the cautious coaches promise. Poor position cost me kilos on the bar. It did not cost me my back. The answer to a bad hinge is to coach it, not to abandon the lift.

The Coaching Variable the Podcast Conversation Always Omits

The deadlift does not have a fixed risk level. The quality of instruction sets its risk, the appropriateness of load, and the consistency of progression. Saying deadlifts are dangerous without naming those variables is like saying driving is dangerous without distinguishing a supervised learner doing 30 mph in a car park from an unlicensed teenager doing 90 on a wet motorway. The activity is identical and the risk is not, because the risk lives in the supervision and the load, not in the movement.

Most deadlift injuries in the general population happen in the absence of coaching, under inappropriate load, with positional errors a competent eye would have corrected on the first rep. The mechanism of injury is rarely the lift. It is the absence of qualified oversight, and that is the one thing the podcast host never asks about.

Previous injury changes the coaching approach. It does not change the destination. A good coach accounts for injury history, adjusts the entry point, and manages the progression from there. The structure still adapts. It just starts from a different place.
